Hop-Picking in the Garden (Sep 2011)

Thanks to everyone who helped pick all the hops in the garden last week. They will be used as a late hop addition to a pale ale brewed by Gary at Red Squirrel Brewery, using a recipe similar to last year's successful Heronsgate Pale Ale.

All 7kg of hops will go into the boil to produce a really hoppy aroma. The beer will be brewed early October, and will be on sale later in the month, once it has matured.

Chiltern Quiz League Plate Final - April 2011

Teams from The Squirrel and The Land of Liberty (LoL) gathered at The Sugar Loaf in Little Chalfont for the final of the plate competition. They were joined by a good number of spectators. Walter the landlord of The Sugar Loaf and this year's competition sponsor laid on his usual warm welcome to start with and a welcome tray of sandwiches to finish.

The first two rounds were presented as a gentle easing in to the game and with very little trouble it was 16-16 after two rounds. The only bother either team had was in remembering to give the correct answer to the questions that had been heard before, whereas as we know it's easy to remember the wrong answer that was given last time, not necessarily the correct one.

The first individual round saw LoL slip up on the bonus question: in cockney rhyming slang, "Reg" is sometimes used to describe people of which nationality?" Most of us worked out that Reg must lead to Varney, no-one managed to rhyme Varney with Pakistani. 25-21 to The Sqsometimes used to describe someone of which uirrel but the LoL pulled back in the next round, then another full house in Round 5 took us to a high-scoring 38-39 in The Squirrel's favour at the break.

The second half continued with most questions being answered correctly, but gradually it was the Squirrel that picked up the extra points. It seemed that although the LoL were only getting one question wrong each round, the Squirrel was getting them all right. Indeed the Squirrel only dropped one team question in the second half, which made it difficult for LoL to get back on level terms.

The final score was a win for The Squirrel by 80 points to 67 - another very high aggregate score in a game which was closer than the margin of victory would suggest.

Well done, team, for getting that far!

Charity Beer Tasting - March 2011

Gill hosted a beer tasting for four regulars recently after the pub offered the evening for a charity auction. The four attendees generously paid £101 for the evening whihc included two presentaitons on the theme of tasting beers, and three pairings of beers to compare. Everyone enjoyed the evening and claimed to have learnt something new about the art of tasting.
The money has been donated to Watford Peace Hospice to support their ongoing work.

Gill hosts tastings on request for novices or real ale regulars, please ask at the bar if you would like to discuss an event.
